There are some great
walks from Keswick to suit all
standards of walker. Leave your car at Derwent Cottage and try one
of the following walks:
WALLA CRAG (376 metres) - Interesting walk which has stunning scenery
and gives a panoramic view of Bassenthwaite, Keswick, Skiddaw and
Blencathra. From the top you can indulge in amazing views over Derwentwater
towards
Newlands Valley and down the beautiful Borrowdale Valley. To return
to Keswick either drop down through Great Wood and
walk back following the lake or continue past Falcons Crag down to
the famous Ashness Bridge then back along the lakeshore.
CASTLEHEAD (161 metres) - Relatively easy walk through the woods
to the top of Castlehead where you are greeted by incredible panoramic
views, looking over Derwentwater, from Borrowdale Valley to Keswick.
To extend the walk continue over Castlehead and cross Borrowdale
Road in to Cockshot Wood/ Head through Cockshot to the boat landings
then back through town to Derwent Cottage
CAT BELLS (451 metres) - Quite a strenuous walk
resulting in lovely views up Newlands Valley and towards Bassenthwaite.
Either walk through the village of Portinscale to the foot of Cat
Bells or take the Keswick Launch to Brandlehow. The first part of
the walk is quite steep but it flattens out towards the summit. Depending
on your fitness you can either continue up towards Maiden Moor or
drop down in to Newlands Valley and walk to the Swinside Inn for
a well deserved drink!
There are regular buses up Borrowdale and Newlands Valleys and the
Keswick Launch runs all year round. Please see our links page for
